A new MRI technique can diagnose multiple sclerosis (MS) in just eight minutes—without a lumbar puncture! This quick, safe scan identifies key signs of MS, speeding up diagnosis, improving patient comfort, and potentially saving the NHS millions. This means faster treatment and better support for people with MS.

New 8-Minute MRI Scan Revolutionises Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosis

Diagnosing multiple sclerosis (MS) has just become faster, safer, and much more comfortable for patients, thanks to a pioneering new MRI technique developed by researchers in Nottingham.

A breakthrough in MS diagnosis

Until now, many people suspected of having MS have had to undergo a lumbar puncture—a procedure involving a needle in the lower back to collect spinal fluid. Not only can this be painful and anxiety-inducing, but it also carries a risk of complications and often requires a hospital stay.

The new approach uses a special T2*-weighted MRI scan that takes just eight minutes. This scan detects “vein-centred” lesions in the brain—a hallmark of MS. Researchers have introduced a simple guideline called the “rule of six”: if six of these specific lesions are found, MS can be confidently diagnosed without the need for a lumbar puncture.

What does this mean for patients?

  • Non-invasive and fast: The scan is quick, safe, and completely non-invasive. Most importantly, it eliminates the need for a lumbar puncture in most cases.

  • Earlier answers: The new method speeds up diagnosis by an average of three months, allowing patients to start treatment and support sooner.

  • Better experience: In the study, 75% of patients reported side effects after a lumbar puncture, compared to just 9% after the MRI scan. Every participant preferred the MRI experience.

  • Cost savings: The NHS could save up to £5 million a year by reducing hospital stays and complications related to lumbar punctures—money that can be reinvested in patient care.

How does it work?

The MRI scan looks for lesions in the brain’s white matter that are centred on a vein. If six or more are found, MS can be diagnosed with a high degree of confidence. This method has been shown to be just as sensitive as the traditional spinal fluid test, but is much better tolerated by patients.

A new standard for MS diagnosis

Following this research, international guidelines are now recognising this MRI technique as a reliable alternative to lumbar puncture for diagnosing MS. This is a major step forward for the 150,000 people living with MS in the UK, and for anyone facing the uncertainty of a possible diagnosis.

Looking ahead

This breakthrough is not just about technology—it’s about improving the patient journey. Faster, safer, and more accurate diagnosis means less anxiety, quicker access to treatment, and a better quality of life for people with MS.
